Versatile Quantum Dots

Quantum Dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanocrystals with sizes between 2 and 20 nm. The unique feature of QDs is that their optical and electrical properties can be precisely tuned via particle size, chemical composition and surface chemistry.

QDs offer many advantages over traditional organic fluorescent dyes due to their unique properties such as:

  • continuous, broad absorbance and narrow emission bandwidths, which provide minimal spectral overlap of the emissions from different QDs,
  • ability to generate emissions at different wavelengths by exciting different QDs at a single wavelength with a single light source, which simplifies the excitation device design and thus, reduces the cost,
  • ability to tune emission wavelengths via the size and/or the composition of the semiconductor crystal  in a broad spectral region,
  • large absorbance cross-section and high molar absorptivity which provide high detectability at low mass concentrations,
  • long luminescence lifetime which allow longer analysis time
